Actually i'd be all for this. Road cyclists think they own the road and way too much road is given to them. They are paying zero in taxes for the roads in place and upkeep. I'd be happy if they charged even more for the c02 they exhale contributing to global warming.
Shoes should be registered and taxed as well. Crosswalks take up a lot of road space and pedestrians aren't paying their fair share to maintain them.
Incidentally I can do 20-30mph on my road bike (no motor), and I'm not registering that one either.
not typical for most recreational riders.

So I could take my e-bike on I-280? If you put a gun to my head and made me register, I'd do so at least once after that. It's the one road crossing Second Mountain I haven't ridden.
Mopeds require a license, registration, and insurance. NJ law still prohibits them on divided highways, interstates, and toll roads.
I am against this move to extend registration to all ebikes and escooters. NJ already requires registration and insurance for ebikes (and mopeds) of a certain size. They should just reform the existing laws to address the concerns that is the motivation for the proposed legislation.
I think we should be encouraging cycling in society. Low speed ebikes and escoorters should fall under this and treated ilke a bicycle as currently. Registration is the wrong direction here. It would discourage minors from cycling and impact pedal assist ebikes as well. NJ is pretty bad at providing safe throughway on local roads for cyclists already.
actually it's about raising revenue for the state. Everything is being considered to increase revenue. It's only a matter of time before bicycles will need to be registered and taxed.
I would only support bicycles being registered and taxed under one condition. 100% of that funding goes towards building safer throughways for cycling; ex bicycle lanes.
Since these can do 20-30mph I don't see a problem with this.

A new bill in Trenton would require New Jerseyans to register electric bikes and electric scooters they own and pay insurance before they hit the road.
Things are worse than pedal bikes but people use them the same with "I can ride anywhere I damn will please!"......(and the traffic laws don't apply to me).
Look it up yourself. it depends on the municipalities' public works department. Some portions are from property taxes, state funding, and grants. You guys act like pedestrians don't pay ANY form of taxation... sheesh.
