I have an issue with a PE teacher ( call her teacher 1), who continually harasses my daughter. There is another PE class that my daughter can get into, as that teacher (teacher 2)has joyfully said she could switch. The counselor at this school has said she has had many complaints about teacher 1, and agreed it was in the best interest of my daughter for her to switch. Only thing is....teacher #1 says she wont let my daughter make the change; she told this to the counselor, and so nothing was done. BEFORE I get ahold of teacher #1, (via phone, so I dont get those pretty little cuffs slapped on my wrists), I want to know what the rights of the student/parent are in this situation. If I request that my daughter be switched, b/c I do not believe (based on the last 3 weeks of torment to my child) that things will change (and my daughter will not excel in this class), can my daughter change instructors? I couldnt find any answers on the NJgov site. Please help! Thanks!

the only thing i can think of is to contact the principal and the schol board and file a complaint and ask them again to change her class.

I would be be up at the school complaining. If that did not work I would be at the Superintendent of schools office. It sounds like that teacher not allowing her to transfer has major issues. Most would just sign it and let it be done with. Where I grew up, Lawrence, LI there was a teacher that used her hands, well one year she hit the wrong student, the father was a Lawyer and that teacher was finally sent to retirement. She was 75 and imo had dementia.

You need to request a meeting with Principal. The teacher has no say in who can/not change from class to class. If guidance switches her schedule, the Principal should back the guidance counselor. BTW, very unprofessional for the Guidance Counselor to rat out on a colleague, but in the best interests of your child (and possibly others) it needs to be on record that this teacher is behaving in this manner.
Good Luck!

Another thing you may want to do is type up your request in the form of a short/direct letter. Hand deliver the letter when you have your meeting with principal (if you are meeting before the post office would have a chance to deliver letter). Follow up with a copy of letter mailed via Registered Mail. Make sure the hand delivered copy has REGISTERED MAIL marked on it as well. If you feel it necessary note anyone you are CC-ing the letter to (supt.?). This lets them know you mean business and you are documenting your request. Good luck.

Totally bizarre situation. If I were you, I'd first go directly to the PE teacher's dept. supervisor. The principal will likely send you that route anyway, given most principals have next to nothing to do with scheduling. If you're not satisified with the resolution, then you'd go to someone higher on the totem pole.

I'm surprised you're not at the school already. Whether it's public or private, you are paying for it. You wouldn't settle for something you bought, such as a service, if you were unhappy, why should you have to settle on your child's happiness and education.
This situation has to be extremely distracting for her and will show in her other classes as she is probably stressing over it before and after the PE class.
Get your butt in there and help her out and don't leave until YOU are satisfied.

Let us know how it goes.

Why does the teacher not want your child dropping her class? To me it does not seem like it should anything to do with the teacher whose class you are transferring out of?

I tried to contact teacher 1 several times, leaving 5 messages for her. She did attempt to return my call, leaving me a message, adding complaints about my daughter on the message. I also received a call from the counselor stating the teacher has NOW complained that my daughter doesnt dress down ( because the teacher doesnt like the style of shorts my daughter wears. They are BB shorts, they go to the top of her knees for crying out loud!)After that, being fed up- I contacted the principle expressing my concern ( for the third time), and letting him know that I no longer wish to discuss anything with the teacher, I just want my daughter moved to a new class. Not willing to back down, I stuck to my guns, and got my daughter into a different class. The end result, my daughter is happier, she participates fully, likes the teacher ( who does NOT single my daughter out on a daily basis as the other did), and is enjoying life at school much better! The teacher DOES make all the difference in the world. My child went from hating PE, to enjoying learning new activities, and wanting to be active outside of school. Thank you to all who wrote in response to my inquiry, it was much appreciated!

pretty sure it was a control issue thing. Her tone on the voicemail she left definitely gave me that impression!
