The magnet system works fairly well. Some people complain that they don't get into their first choice of elementary school -- the Bd of Ed will say that everyone gets their first or second choice of school but that's definitely not true! Truth is all the elementary schools in Montclair are good and I have yet to meet someone who was genuinely unhappy with the school their child was in. They all have the same basic curriculum just presented in different ways. Each school has its own personality. As to the racial diversity that was the reason the magnet system was set up in the first place -- it works within limitations. It's not a perfect balance at each school but it's better than if the magnet system wasn't in place at all.
I've never heard of a "magnet system". How does it work?
