I am a single, 30-year old white male looking to rent a place around Maplewood for a job in East Hanover. Being single, I enjoy nightlife, as in bars, bowling, playing pool, etc. Socializing with my own age group is important. Is Maplewood a good match for a single male, or is it more family-oriented? Are there better matching towns in the area for me? Thanks!!

Maplewood is more family-oriented. If you like that area I'd suggest South Orange (the neighboring town) instead.

Maplewood/SO are both IMO more family oriented, and not really a lot of night life. There are a few bars, but nothing with bowling or pool in the direct area.

I agree veuvegirl. Just that, between the two of them I'd say South Orange is a younger crowd (especially with Seton Hall there). You can also easily hop on a train to NYC to go out, if that's your thing (I think there are apartments that you can rent very close to the train station).

I don't really know how many suburban NJ towns with a decent commute to East Hanover would fit the bill.

If the nightlife is a high priority for you, I would go with either Morristown or Montclair. They are both more city-like than places like Maplewood, or as I mentioned in your other thread, Madison, Chatham and downtown Millburn, which merely have nice downtown areas.

Both Morristown & Montclair have a nice variety of restaraunts & bars. You can find the standard American bistro fare, but you can also find Thai, Indian, Japanese, etc. etc.

In addition, both have theaters, museums and lots of little interesting little shops.
I'm pretty sure both also have large populations of young, single people.

Personally, I think I'd prefer Montclair over Morristown. Mo'town has some sketchy areas. Also Montclair has more of a hip feel...a little more artsy. That's just my opinion. I'm sure there are people here who will disagree with me.

You should make a weekend trip up and visit both Montclair & Morristown (very doable in a day) and judge for yourself.

I have to say I agree with these posters. South Orange and Maplewood are nice areas. Great for commuting. Very family oriented. I'm sure there are plenty of singles but you'll have to travel for the night life.

South Orange has nightlife, but it's drunken college students on the rampage. Not something a 30 something would enjoy much.
