I'll be traveling from Metuchen to Newark Station and then transfer to PATH train to WTC. Can I buy a monthly pass that takes care of the complete onward and return trip, or will I have to buy two different passes from NJ Transit and PATH ?
You'll need two different passes. You can get your monthly NJ Transit pass at any NJ Transit ticket counter, or from any NJ Transit ticket machines (I assume there is one at Metuchen station).
You can buy a PATH card in Newark, they're not monthly passes, rather, they are per-ride passes. Usually you'll just buy a 40-trip PATH card and that lasts about a month.
You can also get a SmartCard for the Path. It looks sort of like a credit card. You hold it up to the turnstile, and it scans your ride. You can get monthly unlimited rides. However, I am not sure where to buy them except sometimes they have a little stand set up in the Path station. Check out the Path website - it would probably tell you where else you can get them.
Get your Smart Card online - then after that, you can refill at any machine.
If you get transit check, go to a ticket window for your monthly NJT pass - I'd suggest at Newark, lines are generally reasonable.
