Truth be told, just getting to a point where the majority of people have 3 months of living expenses saved up in an FDIC insured bank account would be a huge improvement over where we are today. We have far too many people living on the edge of financial ruin.
I hope it doesn't come to irrational hoarding of aluminum foil (not that there's anything wrong with reusing as much as you can, not only does it save money, it also saves the Earth) but we do need to undergo a fundamental change in our financial and consumer habits in this country, so that we will all have a more secure future.
and maybe one day, I can stop washing my paper plates again...lol : )))
Personally, I'm at the same job and business is great in my company. Of course our owner is using the recession as a total excuse to screw his employees by not giving raises and increasing our share of benefits...nice capitalist that he is..... so he's raking it in and screwing us...the American way.
My DH was extremely lucky, after loosing his business due to the economic turn down he was out of work for almost a year. He got a crap "fill in" job and then got a very good paying job at a good company with good benefits. We were elated. One month into it they made major benefit changes (for the worse). Then they suspended 401k contributions. Then they informed him that now instead of 8 days off a month he'll have a whopping 5 days off a month - no increase in pay. If you don't like it, get another job. Oh, then they relocated him from 3 towns away to BROOKLYN so he has a 2 hr commute each way every day. So basically, I think it sucks on ice and we have to just deal because there is nothing else going on right now.
That said, I have at least 10 friends (as of today) out of work. Some for as long as 10 months. All are DESPERATELY looking for work and finding nothing. Either menial jobs to get through (but not fully pay the bills) or none at all.
So I don't think the media is "overhyping" this economic downturn. Yes, they play the same song too much, but that doesn't mean the music is not playing if you turn the channel.
