Thanks for all of the responses. Based on all the positive feedback, we will most likely add Scotch Plains/Fanwood to our list of towns.

It does seem like you get alot more for your money in this area than in Westfield and Cranford, does anyone know why that is if everything else is about equal?

I could hypothesize...

In the past, SP/F was more "blue-collar" than your other picks, and the schools were considered not quite as good. Over the past 20 years or so, that perception has changed but real estate values haven't quite caught up. I believe (have to be careful because I've been wrong before) McGinn ES is one of the top ES in the state. The schools are very good.

It borders Plainfield.

It doesn't have the name recognition of Westfield & Cranford.

The downtown areas of SP and Fanwood don't compare to those other two. That might keep prices down, but in many parts of SP/F you're actually going to be closer to downtown Westfield than your own downtown. That being said, I lived a block away from the SP library and every Saturday we would walk to downtown SP to the Farmer's Market, then the wine store, John's Meat Market, then to the Town Bakery. It doesn't have the glitz of Westfield, but there was a nice old time feel to the stores and businesses in SP.

Hope that helps.
