I worked in Jersey for 25 years (4 different employers) in February 2008 I quit to take care of my sick Mother, after she passed I stayed at home to clean up her place (I was executor). In December I tried to collect unemployment but was refused, unemployment says I quit without good cause. I didn't know about the "Family Leave Act" back then and I didn't appeal the decision back in December(you have to appeal 7 - 10 days), now it's February, does anyone know if I can try to collect again by putting through a new claim? I worked for 25 years... don't I "put in" for that? Shouldn't I be able to get something? I can't find a job anywhere and I need to make ends meet... thank you !

Sorry to say there is nothing you can get. Family leave act is #1 not retroactive and even it was #2 You Quit. Family leave act is not for people who quit. It's a lot like temp disability.

Did your company have a pension and/or 401K program?

Yes they had a 401K, however, I never rolled my old one over to the newer job (the one I quit)... I called Fidelity about that money because I thought maybe I could take that money without a penalty (because of my situation) and let them know that I'm in sort of a pickle here.. can't find a job, getting down to the end of my money and they told me that I can take the money but for 60 days (I think it was) but I would have to pay it back and, of course, if I just take it there's a hefty penalty that goes with it. Thanks for your response to my question... I thought maybe because I put in for unemployment all those years I could get something, anything when I really needed it.. guess not.. THANKS !
