Hello,
I am currently considering a move from Houston to NJ to work in the Newark area. While I do have a job offer in mind etc, I am in desperate need of housing advice, e.g., a decent area to rent etc.

Basically, I am after a studio or one bedroom with little need to be in the center of hustle and bustle of life. Rent around 1000-1500 seem plausible?

So, any ideas?

Do you want suburban or urban?

If suburban, try Nutley, Montclair, Verona, or Maplewood.

If urban, check out Downtown Jersey City near Grove Street. 10 minute commute to Downtown Newark via Path train.

Be more specific as to what you're looking for. Are you single?

Tommy:

Thanks for the reply…suburban is closer to what I am after. Also would like a W/D and parking space, too.
However, a minimal commute would be appreciated, but I am aware of the trade-offs. So, anything under a one hour commute one way is a start.
I am single, but more of a bookworm than a club-hopper.

Montclair is a really good town. I would start with that--it's pricey--and fan out from there.

Stay in Houston, New Jersey is cold in the winter, and not just for one or two months. I think Houston as so much more going for it.

Morristown is nice, too. Further out, longer commute, but a cute colonial feel to it.

Check out the Gaslight Commons apts in South Orange. Nice apts, close to Seton Hall and younger people, within your budget for a 1BR, has a w/d, and within walking distance to the train, plus free parking. Good luck.

Hello,
First time poster here. I am in agreement with recommending Montclair, and Verona in Essex County. Montclair is great for singles, and has been compared to the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Many ex-Manhattan-ites live there. It would be an easy commute to Newark. I would also recommend Cedar Grove, which is next to Verona, and next to Montclair/Upper Montclair. There is a place called "Bradford Arms Apartments" and they currently have apartments available as per Craigslist in Northern NJ . I've driven by there a thousand times and didn't know there was a pool! That's rare around here. It's got a D/W and is in your price range.

New Jersey is cold in the winter as a previous poster wrote, REALLY cold!
Good luck to you in your search for housing!
