Hey guys, i havn't posted in a while on here but i did ask for help on here a few times and i have gotten a good deal of help, so I'm back.
Alright, well I have been searching for a small 2 bedroom single family in north jersey for a while now in my price range (275K-315K) and i've narrowed it down to two homes but i just can't decide on what's a better town.
A little bit about my background, I'm a single young mid 20s African American girl who just graduated college who is renting in Roselle right now, and my least ends next month.
So i'm in kind of a dilema on which town is better.
The two homes are equal on my level and i can live in each with out a regret of not choosing the other, but it's the towns i'm not too familiar with.
One home is in Maplewood, and it is definitely in the location i am looking for, but its surrounding areas have a beyond horrible rap... How is Maplewood to you CD posters?
The other home is in Bayonne, and it is a bit cheaper, and a bit smaller. But the sizes for each home are perfect to me. Anyway; It's located right off Kennedy Blvd.. from what i can tell, it looks like a safe, family oriented area, but I do know Kennedy Blvd can get busy and conjested.
My commute is to Newark, so both places don't have such a bad commute.
Which is a better location?
(sorry for the blabber)
No contest. Maplewood blows Bayonne out of the water. The town does border some really rough areas, but Maplewood itself is a very nice town. It's fairly diverse too, and I think most people would agree it would be a better fit for an African-American than Bayonne.
The cops keep Maplewood quite safe despite the neighboring towns. You can check crime stats and talk to local residents, but I think you'll find crime in Maplewood, even in the areas on the borders, is very low indeed; the biggest issue seems to be some property theft type crimes.
It's also a friendly town with lots of people from NYC, sort of artsy, and a pretty town. I can't say I know Bayonne as well, but I think Maplewood qualifies as "nicer" from most angles.

No contest -- Maplewood.
The town has a more diverse/tolerant vibe -- which makes it seem a better fit for a young African American college grad. The downtown is beautiful. You'll love it there.
Bayonne is a sleepy blue collar town. Very few African Americans there (more in neighboring Greenville Jersey City, but those guys aren't college educated!)
WOW, a lot of good responses towards Maplewood... But like somebody mentioned, it's taxes are killer. Which I'm worried about, but I don't think i'll be alone in the house for so long, so it might be a little easier. Thanks for your help guys .
