If you live in or get hurt in a town that has a volunteer rescue squad, they usually don't charge for there transportation services. The State Police and others such as Northstar run their Medevac type helicopters but I really don't know if they charge for that.
The thing that used to bug me most back when my kids used to get hurt was you go in once but then you get 49 different bills so it gets so confusing.
The bill was for $2,200 and change. Kid just off my insurance and not yet working fell in the driveway Saturday evening and sliced her forearm just below the elbow. Med Emerg closes at 10pm, no doc, so a trip the ER.
That bill is breathtaking to me!
I might have correctly guessed the amount. My husband once took my nephew to the ER in the middle of the night (got an insect bite and his foot was very swollen, looked like it was turning black) where he was diagnosed with an infection and given antibiotics. His bill was over $2,000.
We knew that the bill would be sizable but were just stunned by the amount.

It's ridiculous that they can charge that amount of money without telling you upfront what it is going to cost. I guess they'd get even more fake names if they did that...
Back where I'm from ER visits cost nothing. Heck the wife had a child via C-section with 3-4 days in a room with no other patients afterwards, total bill $0.
my husband got sick the day before we were going away and our doctor was not around. we called our insurance co to see what should we do - go to urgent care or emergency room. he did not want to go to the emergency room b/c he didn't want clog it up. the insurance rep told us that since urgent care was out of network it would cost more $$$ than going to the emergency room, which was $25. he went to the ER, luckily got in and out. got the EOB yesterday - $1000. no tests, no blood drawn, just saw a nurse and doctor.
it appeared to cost nothing but thats clearly a fallacy because the doctors involved got paid and all the people, places and products used were paid for.
In NJ don't hospitals tack on extra to cover cost of care for indigent patients?
That's everywhere- not just NJ. It's part of the reason so many facilities are going under- the can only charge the insurance companies so much, and if they charged the cash customers enough to cover all the freebies, that $3,000 stitches bill would be $10,000.
