I tried events and festivals, but going alone is perceived as stalking irregardless of how much I smile;
I don't drink (much) or smoke and anyway I typically end up sitting next to some guy(s) who pound down the drinks and tell me how bad life is;
I've tried the supermarket thing, but after I find what I want it is just creepy to hang around, because then I feel like I AM stalking.
There are 'open' country clubs, like the Basking Ridge Golf Bar that I want to go to in the spring, has anyone heard about that or similar places where being alone isn't "A SIGN"?

Take a class a one of the local continuing education schools (usually held at local high schools)?
Do the NYC walking tours?

That dreaded old standby: volunteer somewhere?
Mind you, I'm just throwing these things out there--I've been alone for YEARS, but I'm probably a lot older than you are.
Re the country club: Do you actually play golf? Maybe you should take lessons. That is something you can do alone if need be but might likely meet someone with the same interest.
