My husband is considering a job opportunity in West Caldwell, and we're trying to weigh our options. We currently live in the San Francisco area, and I'm not that familiar with New Jersey. Any suggestions on towns commutable to that area (30 minutes or less drive) with truly superb public schools? Our price range would be anything up to about $850k. Bonus points for schools with great gifted and talented programs and/or special needs.

We're looking for a safe, kid-friendly town, too, though I suspect that most towns with superb public schools are probably going to fit that bill.

West Caldwell has what you are looking for. I don't really know what makes a school "truly superb" in your opinion, but you can also consider Millburn, North Caldwell, Livingston, Roseland, Verona, West Orange, or Cedar Grove. All of those are very safe and close to West Caldwell.

All probably about 10 miles from Caldwell...best of the best schools are:

Millburn
Glen Ridge
Mountain Lakes

All great towns in different ways.....

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I'm definitely checking them all out.

Any thoughts on the feel of any of these towns, or any suggestions on good sources to find that sort of information? Obviously we'll travel out there and drive around and try to get a feel for everything, but trying to do as much homework before that as I can.
