Don't know about South Jersey hot dog joints, but here in the North, my regular places are Johnny & Hanges in Fair Lawn and the Hot Dog Caboose in Midland Park. Johnny and Hanges, is bright, clean, spacious, has reasonably good parking, and oh yeah, the food is really good too! The Caboose has really good boiled dogs and they make perhaps the best chili in Bergen County. Amazing Hot Dog in Verona was truly amazing, but sadly, it is no more. Rutt's Hut in Clifton is great, but a bit far for me to go regularly. Goffle Grill in Hawthorne is also good, but I think Johnny & Hanges is better for fried dogs.

Rutt's Hut. I don't think I have ever had a better hot dog.

I know you're supposed to be careful about what you post on the Internet because it can follow you forever. But I'm going to ignore that advice: I like 7-11 hot dogs.

I do too... Or at least I did.

Many years ago, I remember going to 7-11 to get hot dogs and they had awesome crockpots full of chili and cheese, which you could put on your dog yourself. The chili in particular was teriffic, thick and meaty.

A few weeks ago, after several years of not having a 7-11 dog, I decided I had to get one. I went to a local store, got the hot dog, and was looking forward to slathering my hot dog in some of that great chili. I was disappointed when I saw that the chili and cheese were now dispensed through a machine! I started with the cheese, and it missed the dog and got right on my hand. Then, when I pressed the button for the chili, a huge stream of red liquid poured over my dog. I showed the clerk my soaked dog swimming around in a red pool and asked, "Is it supposed to be like this?" She looked at me as if I was crazy and said yes.

I wrung out the dog in the parking lot and ate what I could of the dog (it was $1.89, after all)! The dog itself was actually pretty good, but a hair salty. But unless I find a 7-11 that still has the crockpots of chili and cheese, I'm done with their hot dogs.

Does anyone know of any 7-11s in North Jersey that still offer the chili and cheese in the crockpots?

Hiram's (Fort Lee) and Rutt's Hut (Clifton) are two Northern NJ favorites.
