What do you think of this area:
70th St & JFK in North Bergen
Is it:
1) Safe to take the buses? Can my fiance wait outside for a bus on JFK or will she get hassled?
2) The rent is about 800 for a studio. Seems pretty cheap which is a good thing...but makes me think the neighborhood isnt desirable
3)Does it have a main street and is it walkable to a decent bar/restaurant or do I need to drive down to hoboken?
It is not a bad area insofar as it's not the "hood." But it will have some minor inconveniences.
1) Taking the bus will be safe enough. But it is an area where if you are a woman waiting on the street for a bus you will be subject to "cat calls" and a few "oye mamis" here and there. It was that way years ago when I lived there, and it's still that way now. That said, this could be the case on Washington in Hoboken too, but it's more likely on Kennedy Blvd.
2) Again, I'm not saying it is the "hood" but it's not prime real estate area either. It IS convenient.
3) Although there are some shops and Restaurants on Kennedy Boulevard, were not talking top notch. The nearest "Main" street would be Bergenline Avenue. It's walkable, but not right there. Some of the streets between Bergenline and Kennedy are not the greatest. Bergenline actually has some really good, inexpensive restaurants...most of which are from one of many Latin American nations. It's a VERY Hispanic Area. Not speaking Spanish can be a detriment.
In North Bergen the "nicest" section is considered the "Racetrack" section. This is actually from about 79th street up and consists of most of the blocks between Kennedy and Bergenline leading to the Park. It's pretty. In its day it was THE place to be if you were in North Bergen. It's still not bad, but it's very urban. And again, a large hispanic population. It's not "dangerous" but you'll have urban nuisances.
Oh, and N. Bergen is not comparable to the young, yuppie type scene in Hoboken. For that, in North Bergen, the best place would be Boulevard East and that's going to be expensive (million dollar views there) and that street is "sectiony" too.
You'd have to drive to Hoboken to feel like Hoboken.
well we had an offer an a furnished, 725 a month studio in that area. If we are going to pay 1300 we will do montclair most likely
