Heres a different idea........for many years I used to rent a houseboat and travel through the waterways of Ontario, Canada......you could rent several and split the cost which is far cheaper than a beach rental....google it and check it out....its different and its FUN !!!
LBI or Ocean City, IMO. Both have big houses and are on barrier islands.
I wouldn't hold out for a pool, however. Due to the water table level there are many places near the ocean/bay where it's basically impossible to put in a pool, at least in-ground. My house, for example, can never have a pool built in. But I've always been a salt water kinda guy anyway.
I'd say try far south Jersey Shore. I think Margate/Ventnor/Longport is the best, or Ocean City if you don't minid a dry town. It's a great beach area with awesome, clean, big beaches, and plenty to do, and Atlantic City is close enough (within 10-20 minutes) for a spur-of-the-moment night out for dinner, nightlife, gambling, etc. That's what's so nice - the option of Atlantic City - if you never go, it doesn't really change anything, but if you want to go it's right there for you. Also, I think the rentals are a little less expensive than LBI and north. It's definitely worth the extra hour (max) drive.
And in case you're wondering, I don't know either why some people assume you don't know what you're doing when you ask about a place so they advise you to go someplace completely different and much, much, much farther away (10x farther away) and in another country.
Longport and Margate are two of my favorite towns in the whole state. I currently live in Ocean County but when contemplating a move (my job takes me everywhere from Monmouth County down to Cape May, so I can pretty much go anywhere in that swath) those two towns are always in the back of my mind as somewhere I'd like to end up.
Longport is a little more densely put-together than Margate, but the houses are bigger and a bit more modern. FWIW, I've also never seen a town in New Jersey where more people successfully grow palm trees than Longport. And that's not a bad thing.
A.C. is about 15 minutes north, Ocean City (for the kids) is about 10 minutes south. So you're right in the thick of things.

I agree with the other posters. LBI, Ocean City, and I'll add Cape May.
Stay away from Sleazeside Heights! You will get exactly what you see on MTV's "Jersey Shore"...drunken, urban, twenty-somethings getting in fights and urinating on your lawn.
South Jersey for sure, stay far far away from Seaside Heights. I'd add brigantine to the list as well. Couple beach mansions with pools that match your needs.
I'm prejudiced, but I would recommend OC if you want family-friendly. Wildwood is good too especially if you have older kids who want scarier rides, but the Wildwood boardwalk is a little rougher than OC. In OC you could let the older kids go around by themselves at night without worrying about drunks, catcalls (if they're girls), etc. Either towns website will have links to realtors, they are all reputable at least here in OC. Berger is one of the biggest here. You can also try Craigslist, but I would personally rather have the realtor behind me if there are issues (the fridge breaks, etc). A home rental is your best bet for the number of people you have, but very very few homes down here have pools. There may be some with pools in the Gardens section, which is more residential, but there are less rentals in that part of town also.
Seaside Park, right next to Seaside Heights is quite nice. The premium towns are Bay Head, Spring Lake, Mantaloking. Also Long Beach Island (LBI) is nice--you might want to avoid Ship Bottom just because it's closest to the highway. Loveladies and Harvey Cedars are premium on LBI.
(The Jersey shore is split between north jersey and south jersey/philly vacationers. all the ones listed above are north jersey-nyc. The towns south of LBI are popular with philly people, including Stone Harbor, which is premium.)
