i been trying to get into graduate school for fine arts for quite some time and got accepted to njcu (nowhere else) so i'm going to visit next week. i'm not that familiar with new jersey but i did take a road trip to the pine barrens once with someone who apparently thought there was more to see than what we found... anyway, i'm starting to wonder, you know, maybe they only accepted me because they're really desperate for money or cause no one else wants to go there(!)...

several native new yorkers who i've told about this have snickered and i donno if that's just new yorkers having their superiority thing over new jersey or if they know something about njcu or jersey city that i don't. one told me jersey city is 'pretty rough' and 'a dump' well i figured that was good cause rents will be more reasonable. biggest city i ever lived in was lubbock tx (pop 200,000) and there was some weird violent crimes there as a single female it bothered me at first but then i just got kinda blase about it so i figure the same thing would happen to me in jersey city...

any insights would be appreciated.
thanks,
cory

Not familiar with NJCU, but Jersey City isn't exactly the place to be, especially being a female living alone. Maybe if you commute to school... but as a young, single female I would not want to be walking around Jersey City at night...or any time of the day for that matter.

Now you're exaggerating a bit.
Some parts of JC are nice, some are not. As is the case with any city.

I have lived in Jersey my whole life and went to college here. I havent heard of NJCU though.

Jersey City isnt great, but you can find something ok in the city. Search on here for neighborhood info and you will find plenty of info

Not all of Jersey City is bad, but you have to go through the bad parts to get to the good ones.

I think the area surrounding NJCU is at least marginal, really don't know it though.

Jersey City has some nice areas and some pretty bad areas. NJCU is in one of the rougher areas. You probably won't want to walk there -- you'd need to take a bus or drive.

Nearby living options are Bayonne, other parts of Jersey City and Hoboken. Parking in downtown Jersey City and Hoboken is a bit of a challenge.

I don't know what the school is like.

If you've never lived in a bigger city than Lubbock, you'll find there's plenty to do in JC and Hoboken, even if you can't convince the Manhattan snobs to leave their little island to come visit you.

Jersey City is not a bad area. By the water you have yuppies in half a millon dollar condos. And other parts are coming up because of this. As for JCU, its ok. Its basically a city college with very lax admisission standards. The people that go there for the most part are Jersey city kids that can't afford to go to a private or state school.

Jersey City aside from downtown is one of the worst crime cities in NJ. Would you say that Atlantic City is a nice city since it has the boardwalk and casinos? I dont understand why people on this board sugar coat NJ's cities. Im not bashing them I just speak the truth. As for NJCU the area is really on the cusp of a bad area, the school itself is not really the best. I took a few classes at the campus and was not really to thrilled.

My boyfriend went there for half of undergrad and he's back for grad school.

The area around the school is REALLY bad. I would not recommend walking around the area at night, ever (can be sketchy during the day too). It's in the Greenville section of JC, so you can search that on here to see what I mean. You could get a decent apartment in another town for pretty cheap too, if you look. Try Kearny or Harrison, depending on your price range.....definitely safer and a quick drive in.

NJCU itself is a decent school. It's a state school, so some might snicker at it. But honestly.....you get what you put in, it is what you make of it, etc etc. Sure, there's some really stupid people there, but it's like that everywhere. I think my boyfriend had a 3.3-3.4 undergrad GPA and that's where he's going now.
