Who said we're not trying to help people in this state/country as well? Lottery helps quite a few people from all financial backgrounds.
And as for the reinvest? It does matter as that is a big argument used. They're supposedly a drain on taxes, yet they reinvest MORE into them. IT DOES MATTER.
The biggest thing about immigration is people are HURTING and starving and need jobs. The best thing we could do is work with the Government of Mexico and other Latin-American nations to develop jobs and a good standard of living in those places. Nothing else will work. As long as people can get jobs and food here and not at home, they will come here. That is the root problem
They're effectively Americans when they receive those scholarships. They were raised here, speak english, work here, and got themselves through public school. Why NOT reward them? They will end up contributing massively back to this country. It is wrong to punish a child that was brought her at a young age for a situation out of their control and in most circumstances their parents control. The question is, do you want highly capable individuals who will most likely attain citizenship, and who will most likely help their parents attain citizenship, and will contribute GREATLY to this country, or do you want individuals who end up having to work sub-par jobs in bad conditions like their parents? Fact is that they're already here, it is a problem, but just dumping people and treating them like crap will do nothing to improve their situation or ours. We need to find a solution that respects this.
How do you propose to fix the mess, then? Just kick everyone out and hope they don't come back? That seems to be the rhetoric from the GOP, and a reason why I am backing Denish.
I'll be backing Denish, though I have qualms with her as well. It doesn't take much though to keep me from voting for the Republican party - which in my opinion continues to campaign on people's irrational fears/prejudices rather than actual fiscal conservatism (how a conservative party can be so anti - conservation is beyond me).

It might seem wrong to punish kids for the actions of their parents, but by giving these kids educations past high school you are rewarding the parents and stressing to illegals or those who are not yet here: come to America, we will help support you and your kids, give you medical care, anything you want and give your kids an education. If your kids want to major in a field that will help people in Mexico that is fine as well.
What do you mean mommy and daddy will become citizens, what makes you think this will be the case?
Our government has enough people to support we dont' need anymore.
