If any US Citizen over the age of 18 does not know that New Mexico is a state, they are indeed an idiot. Ok, maybe that was a little harsh. How can some folks be so geographically challenged?

Some folks have never met a map they could read. Others can drive to Anchorage or Alamogordo by memory.

Knowledge of US and world geography is underwhelming.

I've told several people that my son was born in Uzbekistan.

Confused look.

Lightbulb.

"Oh, you must mean Pakistan! "

I don't think it's harsh at all. I wouldn't even say 18; I'd say age 8 but I've been surprised for the past 3 years that several people I've talked to business wise don't know NM is a state. At first, I thought they were joking or BSing around and when I found out they didn't know, that's just too funny to me. They're idiots.

As of 2010 I do not know how a select, but sizable minority still fail to recognize that there is indeed a state called New Mexico. I thought Bill Richardson's presidential campaign helped to educate a good number of Americans.

My funny story involves a conversation with a women in her late 20's who somehow thought that taking a vacation to New Mexico, equated to boarding a Cruise Ship in Ft. Lauderdale and heading due south. Did I also mention, she drove a Hyundai SANTA FE!

We have told some family and friends that we are stationed in New Mexico... and they keep asking us "So hows Mexico?"

So annoying. In my house I have plenty of maps up .. so that my kids dont grow up and think that we can drive to Germany! etc

I think there are several major factors at play. 1) People don't listen 2) People don't read 3) Questionable education with little focus on US History, Geography, or Civics. 4) We are breeding a nation of ...... (you fill in the blank) .... very sad.

Never run into this yet. The people I've run into intuitively know New Mexico is an American state but they equate New Mexicans to Mexicans. I think the "Mexico" thing gets stuck in their head and the "New" falls out of it.

What I do run into is folks that want to move to NM and don't really have a clue about actually living here.

To be honest, I've never run into a US native who didn't know that New Mexico is a state.
Their understanding of WHERE it is might have been really shaky, but not that it was a state.

I think, as said above, that people don't listen well and at times the "New" in New Mexico
doesn't register and that causes the confusion.
