I'm sure you could find a few very good artists in the area that could offer
high quality art classes. I know Ruidoso used to have several good artists
that sometimes offfered workshops. When I say it isn't a great art town
I am referring more to art sales. Ruidoso would be the best in the alamogordo
area and possibly a little in cloudcroft. No other part of the state will have
the art sales activity like santa fe and scottsdale, az. Those are the two
largest art markets in the southwest with Taos coming in behind those
two I mentioned. There are many artists living in all the small towns in NM
including mountainair, NM. It's pretty small but I was there a few weeks
ago and was impressed with some of the work in a small gallery. Silver
also has some pretty good artists but I'm guessing the art program
at western University might not think so. I've been told it's the same
in Las Cruces.

Faculty vs community, huh? Depends on your support base, I guess. I enjoyed the museum downtown in Silver and a gallery we visited. Not the availability of moderately priced homes on the market there, compared to Alamogordo. We like the Silver city area; friendly people we met while camping at City of Rocks in our pop-up camper, and really like Pinos Altos community.

You asked about the galleries in Ruidoso that I liked and I can't remember
the names of those galleries. Hopefully they are still there but it was approx.
one year ago when I was up there. I happened to be in Alamogordo a few
days ago and things looked a little better than the last time I was there.
I forgot about the NMSU campus up on the hill, but maybe they offer a few
art classes. I do like the fact that ruidoso and cloudcroft are so close
and El Paso is about 90 miles to the downtown area. El Paso has a fairly
good art museum. Silver city is nice but it is a little off the beaten path
but I guess Alamogordo is about the same thing. There are some art galleries
in Silver but only one or two impressed me. The galleries in Ruidoso were
probably higher quality. I'm also retired but I did illustration for many years
so it wasn't all that difficult to pick up fine art painting vs doing tight illustration but I'm always looking for a critique now and then. There are
quite a few good artists in Las Cruces and that is less than 70 miles
from Alamogordo so that could be a possibility for you. How soon do
you plan on moving to Alamogordo?

Default Arts in Alamogordo area

We camp near Ruidoso, at Bonito Lake in Lincoln Natl Forest, so will check out the galleries there in June when we go to NM to camp. Cloudcroft is very much a tourist town, which isn't all bad, and their art league is welcoming.

I have always been interested in art, took art history at UT, but never worked in the field. Now that I retired, I am doing what I regret that I wasn't brave enough to do earlier. Late start, but I do it mostly for the joy of it. Painting enhances my life, gives me goals, and lets me look at the world from a richer perspective.

We were ready to put our house on the market, sell it and move to Alamo area within the year. But we had 3 realtors out this week, and it looks like we can't sell our house and do much more than break even. So we will continue to work on it, painting walls, etc., and wait for a more favorable market. Hope for next year.........

We are planning our next trip to NM, and will camp the whole summer into October.

I'm also trying to sell my house or will be putting it back on the market
but I'm not getting to much encourgement from the realtors. I now live
in T or C and definitely want to be in a little larger town with better medical
and restaurants. I might consider Alamogordo myself or maybe just return
to Arizona. I want to start doing more contempory art with some realism
and I'm not sure how that would be accepted here in New Mexico except
in santa fe. Ruidoso is pretty much cowboy art but there might be some
exceptions. I would like to be closer to the mountains and for that
Alamorgordo would work just fine. Tula Rosa is a cute little community.

Hi Bigsandy; It is great to find someone out there who's on the same wavelength as myself. I am new to Alamogordo, retired, and like you, cannot find any art groups/persons to connect with. I work mainly in watercolors with a focus on florals or seascapes. Like you, I paint for the sheer joy of watching something unique and wonderful "happen" when you put a brush to a bit of pigment. I sure wish I could find someoneor a group to connect with who have as much fun painting as I do; it would make my time here a bit less lonesome...........

designer and jacquelinesue Hope we end up in alamo at the same time, because we could start our own artists' group! Tularosa is a neat little town, and we drove around there and looked to see what was available this summer. We heard from a realtor about a house there, that is now leased for a year, and hope to keep in touch with her. We are not giving up on the move, just delaying it somewhat.
