I am very curious as to holiday customs in New Mexico. I have heard something about making tamales for Christmas Eve. In the Santa Fe area, I think someone told me about walking in the snow on Canyon Rd and touring artists studios. Any more?
Christmas Eve is the farolito walk on Canyon Rd. Farolitos are bags filled with sand and a candle that are supposed to light the way for Joseph and Mary. Houses all around that area put them around their houses and also luminarias, which are bonfires. Some houses will be serving biscochitos, cider and coffee.
The glowing brown sacks that adorn Albuquerque walkways, churches and homes each holiday season are called luminarias and date back more than 300 years.
Albuquerque calls them luminarias, Santa Fe calls them farolitos. This has been argued forever and I'll just leave it at that.
