California is considered the worst, but we are in the ten worst. Mainly upper mid-western states came out in the ten best.

I wonder how they get the quality of a state's governance from these metrics.

Whether a state can afford to insure its citizens has little to do with corruption and competence (at the government level) and everything to do with its population and tax base.

NM has, since its inception, had a very poor population in place. Its geographic isolation, low population density, lack of natural resources (oil, gas and coal don't make up for lack of navigable rivers and fertile farmland), and cultural disengagement with type-A capitalism hamper it economically even as they provide for its enchanting qualities. You're not going to make a low-tax, socialist utopia out of this mix no matter who you vote into office.

Use different parameters next year and stay in business...

They also mentioned highest violent crime rate for NM, but if you search their site about crime, NM is not near the worst (I could not find it).

I just looked at the survey hosts name and realized their bias. What appeals to Wall Street is not likely to appeal to me. If you want to see a poorly run state, try New Hampshire. With 435 idiots in the legislature and no real tax base this state is no bargain. Except for the southern tier, filled with people working in well paid jobs in Massachusetts, the state is just about as poor as New Mexico but with a 40% higher COL.

I agree.

It's almost apples and oranges.
