NM and its neighbors do in fact have apples and fall colors...they're just not always where the people are. kpl1228, you're in Northwest New Mexico...a quick weekend road trip to Chama, Taos, or Durango might be just what you need. Check ahead and make sure you go when the leaves are changing.
I moved to NW NM from the midwest immediately after college. I missed a few things, but not greatly. I loved being in New Mexico. My brother also moved down for college, and his girlfriend moved there a few years later. She had a really difficult transition. She was more attached to things in the midwest and found New Mexico so different and she was miserable at first. Once she got involved with others, made friends, and begin to enjoy some of the local specialties (like green chile), she liked it better, but she never really wanted to stay, and they moved back to the midwest a few years later.
I think you have to find the things that make your area of NM special and wonderful and focus on those, and get involved and go from there. Some people really can't seem to move away from their home area and be happy in a new location, and some just need extra time to adjust. I never stopped missing Fall in the midwest, because it was my favorite time of the year. But I did learn to appreciate the seasons in NM and what they were like.
I understand how you're feeling. I moved to New Mexico from Seattle about 2 1/2 years ago now. Though Seattle doesn't have the beautiful falls as much as the Midwest does, I do miss waking up to crisp air and dew on the ground, something I have yet to see since moving here. Overall, though, I don't miss my hometown. I agree with that others have said, take a trip home and visit your family and soak it in for a week or so. Trust me, you'll be ready to come back after your visit. If not, it might mean it's time to head back.
I know how you feel. We're moving back to Wis. after being gone since 1990. We've been in NC and two locations in Texas. We've enjoyed Texas, but its not home.

There are things I miss as well, including family, good food, changing of the leaves but some of the things I don't miss is the high humidity and mosquitos.
If its any consolation I couldn't even sit on the deck from June-September because of the mosquitoes in the north woods this year. Its been beautiful for a month, but summer was a bust.
