So I currently got charged with a misdemeanor for drug paraphernalia and am currently going to college for music education, to hopefully become a music teacher one day. Right now I have to take an intro to Music Ed class and we are required to take a background check so that we can observe the band classes, my question is; is this misdemeanor going to affect the chances of me becoming a teacher? If so is there any way to get this off my record.

not sure what state you are going to college in or where you will be looking for work.
But in a nut shell, yes it's going to affect your ability to become a teacher in most places.
Get it off your record?
Quit violating the law, wait a few (5+) years, hire a good lawyer and ask for a pardon and expungement of the record.

I'm not a lawyer, but if I were in your position, I'd ask the judge for deferred adjudication.

But first, you should consult an attorney.

I knew someone that was caught shoplifting while they were in college, still. Long story short, they ended up working at a background check place, ran fingerprints (federal and state) on themselves and looked up their record - nothing. They ran the most in-depth check they could because they had relatives that owned the place so took that liberty. Talk to the lawyer/police and ensure them how important your future is. They told the person I knew that they'd ensure it didn't mess up their future as the person was a first time offender. I think the charges were basically dismissed pending community service, and then sealed. I'm not sure, though. They also told this person that they could be kicked out of school for this, so they really made sure it wouldn't "see the light of day".

So, yeah. You should really consult someone to see what your future looks like, now, and ways to minimize the damage as much as you can. I'm not sure if shoplifting is far different from drug charges, though. My 0.02c.

Good luck, OP. This won't define your future - but you'll need to stay out of trouble from now on.
