We will be in Albuquerque again (yes!) this fall and plan to look at some potential neighborhoods. What areas besides Nob Hill are near the University and suitable for a retired couple? Open to other suggestions, is anything suitable near Old Town? We are not interested in subdivisions or gated communities and ideally prefer just a nice friendly mix of people as neighbors. That said we liked Corrales, older area, but maybe above our means. We are really excited to be back in Abq. again, always have a positive experience when we visit Thank you.

There's always the student ghetto (S of Central, W of Girard). Houses that are older than you, but among the highest walkability scores in the city.

If you feel young when you're around people in their twenties, you will there.

I don't know about friendly mix; while there's the occasional super-nice twentysomething college student in the area, the area does get a lot of SWAT calls.

You might also look near downtown. Lot of new and old housing, and a quick bus ride to UNM. Does feel a little antiseptic, particularly with the high-rise apartments and lofts showing up there now.

That's exaggerating things a fair bit. I live in the neighborhood, and while there is definitely a vagrancy problem along the major streets that gets the police called out with some frequency, the neighborhood is very walkable, friendly and very safe. I think you'll find that the SWAT calls (at least the ones that make the news) are more common in the southeast or even the northeast heights than they are in the area you describe. The neighborhood has lots of renters, true, but also lots of nice owner-occupied homes, especially along Silver, Garfield, or any of the college streets (Yale, Harvard, Princeton, etc.) between Yale and Girard.
