The County Commission has a new scheme to grab power in our area.
They want to eliminate ALL the volunteer fire departments East of Alamogordo and take them over. They will ask all the Volunteer members to sign an agreement agreeing to the new policy.
All calls for service will be routed out of Alamogordo, so no matter where you live, add 15 to 20 minutes to response time.
This will be introduced at the Commission meeting September 10th for consideration at the next Commission meeting in October. My information is that this will be presented to the Board by Paul Quairoli, the country fire emergency services director, who used to be with the High Rolls VFD
So, your insurance may go up due to slower response time and obviously your taxes will have to go up when the County employees are running things. And you can just bet they'll need a whole bunch of new vehicles for all the new county chiefs and their sub chiefs to drive?
Sounds like a plan, yes no?
Tell your neighbors, another power grab by the Commissioners is in the works.
My husband and I volunteered with the Timberon Fire Dept. at one time. That's a shame to hear especially with the fire danger in that area. It's an hour and a half from Alamogordo. The town would be burned up before someone from Alamogordo could get there.
Separate city, county dispatch centers sometimes causes response delays

Sometimes when an Otero County resident dials 911, the call, for one reason or another, goes to the wrong dispatch center — Alamogordo's facility in the city police station. If the call's for a medical emergency, city personnel might dispatch American Medical Response to the scene without transferring the call to the county's dispatch facility at Alamotero Lane and Eddy Drive. As a result, county dispatchers end up hearing about the call for the first time when AMR personnel come up on a county channel seeking additional information about the ongoing emergency. At that point the county must call the city's dispatchers to find out what's going on so they can dispatch volunteer fire and EMS resources to the scene from nearby departments. The result, according to one county firefighter, is a delay in sending resources that are supposed get on scene before AMR can arrive from Alamogordo, a procedure that aims to save time in what are often life or death situations. Dungan volunteers say keep autonomy

Members of the Dungan Volunteer Fire Department defended the importance of maintaining their department's autonomy before the Otero County Commission Thursday.
Nothing at all in the proposed ordinance that eliminates any Fire Department!
The only thing on the agenda for tomorrow is to get the "ok" to hold a public hearing on the proposed ordinance.
There are a ton of things wrong with this proposed ordinance from my point of view, as well as the point of view of numerous other Departments. But spreading rumors that are false does nothing to help solve anything!
And this was killed, as expected, for the time being, by the County Commission.
Just like the tree trimming proposal a few years back. As soon as 50+ people showed up to say Hell No! it disappeared.
This will be back in some form.
