Taos in the winter sticking on paved roads and keeping the house stocked with food, water and so forth to avoid unscheduled trips. Bad idea?

You'd be stuck at home very rarely but it would undoubtedly happen sooner or later. That's probably the case even if you had a 4x4. Lots of people that live in Taos have regular cars, most people I would say. I wouldn't worry at all.

Taos winters would NOT ever be my thing but that's just me. I read a blog type thing by some guy that has lived there for a decade or more. He can't even get out of his driveway for days on end with a pickup. It's a mud hole.

Depends... What's your point?

Live there all year round? Nothing wrong with that, but just not for me.

Just going up for one winter? I would have considered that in my youth.

I had a neighbor in Rio Rancho that would drive up to Taos at least once a week... It's about 125 miles one way, 5 hours total drive...

His driveway was a mudhole, or Taos was a mudhole?

Living in Taos year round.

His driveway and the road to his house which is off the paved road as many in NM are. Didn't you post that you lived in Taos awhile back?

When you say paved roads, do you live on a paved road? Is your driveway and house located with a good view to the south? Do you have to drive on steep roads to get in or out?

Taos doesn't get that much snow, and if you are located in a sunny spot, there won't typically be a lot of build up. The snow will stick around all winter though in shaded areas. Dirt roads will be muddy. Steep roads often impossible.

Taos averages 29-32 inches of snow a year, depending on where you get your number. That's a little over the national average. BUT, move a little away from the town center and the number could change. Towards the ski valley or into the canyon and the numbers could go up.

It hasn't been much of a winter this year. In Santa Fe, they say front wheel drive is enough, even in heavier winters. That was always fine for me. I don't know about Taos, though. But winters have been milder the last few years, and this year, especially.
