I am looking to move out of the New York area. I want to find a place that is interesting, comfortable and affordable. Silver City looks ideal. One thing that worries me, (maybe it shouldn't, but you wouldn't want to move across the country and find out you're not welcome) is whether being Jewish would be an issue in Silver City. I'm not very religious and I don't expect to find a big community, a synagogue or Hannukah decorations in the town square, but I'd like to make sure I'm not likely to find hate and anger. Would a Jewish woman from NY be comfortable in Silver City?
I have never lived there, but for what its worth, I have never heard of any serious anti-Semitism anywhere in the state. You would get way more flack for being a New Yorker (mostly good natured) then for being Jewish, I'd bet.
Realize that Silver City is a smaaaall town and not in the most populated part of the state. I have known some out of staters who have lived there and had nice things to say. But they all eventually moved to Albuquerque.
I find it interesting that the several "religious population" sites for Silver City that I looked at show "non-religious" to far outnumber the next largest "Catholic" designation. Jewish population is less than 1%.
Completely different question, what's yard maintenance like in NM? Do most people have lawns?
Xeriscaped yards are the norm here - not much in the way of lawns although you do see the occasional one. So most yard maintenance consists of pulling weeds and replacing any rock that disappears over the years.
I would highly recommend a visit (preferably more than one) first rather than just packing up and moving out here. There is more to adjust to and take into consideration than how you would feel as a Jewish woman living in the area.

People who insist on having manicured grass lawns and flower/vegetable gardens also have some means of irrigating on a regular basis. In my town, irrigating using metered water from the public system can get expensive as the more you use, the higher the cost (of both water and sewer!).
Natural rainfall is not adequate enough to maintain lawns - especially during the summer. I would say that most people in subdivisions compromise by xeriscaping their front yards to minimize watering/upkeep by relying on drought-resistant plantings. Many have at least some grass, and maybe flower beds, in their rear yards.
25% of houses have the "natural" landscape (dirt with knee-high weeds)
In Silver City, I suspect the number with lawns is lower and the number with "natural" landscape is higher.
Probably true, but given Silver City's location in the pinyon-juniper savannah zone I expect the "natural" landscape is probably a little nicer, with more naturally occurring shrubs and grasses.
