Here's a couple of stories about deaths just last summer in 2 separate incidents on IH-70 near the AZ/NM state line:

25 Vehicle Pile-up resulted in 6 deaths in June

Another death in August in the same area

OP: We moved from Seattle 10 years ago. As other posters mentioned, there's a heck of a lot of sand and dust here, worse in some areas more than others. We live at 7,000 feet in high desert, rural area. I'm used to the sand and dust now but expect it to invade your home, making housekeeping more challenging. We traded Seattle mold for sandy dust! The wind at times just plain annoys me. Glad my house is built to CA earthquake standards because the winds can really blow! Good luck here. (BTW, if it weren't for Seattle's now-hellacious traffic, I'd move back).

Gal: Thanks for the warning. I can see that the dust is a worthy adversary. I pulled a couple of window screens and found not traces, but tablespoons of dust and sand in the tracks! I was going to wash my windows but will wait for warmer days and pressure wash the outside of the house before attempting windows -- and need to get it done before the spring wind season.

Don't the winds die down when it gets really hot around July? I'm planning my trip.

High wind season is typically early Mar to early May. At least around here. It isn't much worse than the national average actually.

The rainy season starts in July, and lasts a couple months.

I was in ABQ yesterday buying a new Subaru and my salesman, who has lived in ABQ all his life, said the wind season was the only thing he didn't like about it.
Thanks for posting that chart, rruff. I usually study those pretty closely but for some reason didn't pay much attention to the wind graph.

Which Subaru did you get, Oregon Bill. Congratulations!

Elko, I traded my 2016 F-150 for a 2018 Forester Premium. So far so good, but I am already missing the versatility of a pickup bed. Guess that's why God made Northern Tool utility trailers.

Very nice. I was really digging the '17 Subaru Impreza base model 5-speed, but held off because our situation wasn't completely set towards a good future in Washington. The AWD would be nice. I ended up buying some Michelin X-Ice x3 snow tires for the Kia Soul, but the snows on the eastern side of Lake Chelan still proved to be a formidable foe.

We're in Boise now at our Motel, just getting ready to set out for sites southward.
