Hi Everyone,

While I live in Los Angeles, I have visited Silver many times due to having family in the southern part of the state. I would really love to hear what it is like to live there from folks who either live there now, have lived there recently, or frequent the area enough to know the ins and outs. I know it is a small college town with art artsy vibe. For some reason, I keep feeling a lure back to it. However, I would live to hear what it is really like from people who know more than my casual tourist experiences. I love arts, diversity, mild to warm places, and grew up in a small town myself. I work independently as a mental health therapist and would want to continue to do so. Part of an older gay couple who values family and community, but I mean every person in a community and not just those like myself. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead of time!

We had two neighbors here in Rio Rancho who moved here from Silver City, stayed a few years then moved to other states to be with their adult children. One couple moved to Colorado and I do not recall where the other couple moved to...

We have been to Silver City, but not recently. Too small for us and we have children in this area...

Greatly appreciated, Poncho, NM! Thanks for the informative reply and list of links to research further. While I notice some of these replies are rather old, I wonder if much has changed in recent years? If anyone has current feedback, that would also be helpful!

I forgot to mention the Silver City Daily Press which started publishing in 1935: Silver City Daily Press | Gateway to the Gila Wilderness

Default Thanks!

Poncho_NM, thanks for that addition! Just read it. Of course, small for a small town but nevertheless surprised to see the engaging content! It really has potential. We are also checking out a few areas outside of ABQ, like Cedar Crest and Edgewood. I think I need to go to the ABQ thread to search for info on those area.

Negatives against SC are fairly high crime (check the CD page), and being small and isolated. I like the town, the vibe, the climate, and the vast wilderness and mountains.

I started going there in the late '80s. It doesn't seem to have changed much as far as I can tell. There are surely more retired transplants and probably fewer mining jobs. About the same vibe, and neither growing nor declining.

Thank you, rruff! I appreciate your feedback about SC. I checked out the Chamber of Commerce site for SC today and have to say I was impressed with the number of involved businesses and the diversity. High crime is something we have lived with in Los Angeles for a long time. I think that what makes a difference in living in a small city is actually getting involved, and there was enolugh to involve ourselves in. We are both artsy, love nature and the outdoors, and enjoy being connected to the community. Stiill on my short list!

Have you visited Bisbee? If not, it's in the same neighborhood and worth a look. Based in the citydata page it appears to be declining, which is a shame. It's a charming place though and it's cheap.

You might as well check out Ruidoso too while you are at it, 4-5hr drive east of SC. Not as progressive as SC, but lower crime, more amenities, not so isolated, and it is actually in the mountains. If you like to play golf there are lots of options here.

Thanks, rruff! I had forgotten about Bisbee and have yet to visit it. That will go on our list as well to check out. I must admit I don't know very much about Ruidoso.any pointers?

Compared to SC or Bisbee it's more conservative and more heavily touristed (west Texans primarily), yet traffic is never bad if you stay away from midtown on holidays and weekends. Crime is low, especially for a tourist town. Housing is reasonable (~$200k median). It's in the pine forest and has cooler temperatures, but still very mild year round. A big and nice casino, horse races in the summer, hiking, MTB, camping, a ski resort on our 12k ft peak, many golf courses, and about what you'd expect for shopping and entertainment in a 10k population touristy "metro".

We wanted to move to SC initially, but decided that Ruidoso would be better for my wife's work. I road cycle and that's how I visited SC initially, at the Tour of the Gila. In Ruidoso there are very few who ride on the road, but this place has the safest and most courteous drivers of anywhere I've lived.
