Where are the best road trip/day trip drives (as a driver) in New Mexico? (Roswell: spring break, hotels)

Anywhere in Otero County. Just beautiful... My favorite road trip is from Dell City, Texas to Cloudcrodt, to Ruidoso, around 246 to Roswell.
That is some lonesome country! Even if Dell City and Pinon count as civilization for you, there's a solid 2 hours between them with virtually nothing manmade to speak of.
I agree that it's incredibly beautiful out there, though.
There are plenty of YouTube videos showing travel on the back roads of New Mexico. You'll see that many of the forest roads can only be traveled by four wheel vehicles, smaller ones the better, and motorcycles. Check out the road through heavily forested Cox Canyon south of Cloudcroft. Man, what a scary, thrilling drive, literally!
Has anyone taken Route 9, straight shot, from Santa Teresa, through Columbus, Hachita and into Animas, then to 80 to Rodeo? Also, from Animas, I once took C001 down to Cloverdale where I did a 3 mile hike down by the border. That was nothing short of surreal, where you drive 40 miles on a dirt road and see literally nothing the entire time.

Many times. Years ago I chose that road to test out the top speed of a sports car I had for while because it's so empty. It would be a different drive with a 30 foot wall taking up the view to the south.

You topped out the speed on your sports car on this road? Because the one down to Cloverdale is gravel. I think you are referring to the road to the Antelope Wells border. From what I hear, an average of only 6 vehicles a day pass through that border checkpoint, making it the most sparse crossing to Mexico.

I don't know, I don't remember much. I remember driving from Fort Bliss, Texas to Columbus, New Mexico in the late 60's with a group of guys when we had a 3 day pass... I remember camping in the desert on the side of the dirt road...
I remember going to Santa Teresa and Animas on other trips many years ago...

Really? What view? If it were "Years ago I chose that road", then you probably were not that interested...

I'll stop derailing. Sorry. Just a fun (if irresponsible) memory that his post triggered.
Edit: I think I parsed your post correctly after re-reading it. On that particular excursion, which was but one of many, along 9 for the mile or so that I was exceeding the speed limit by a pretty significant margin, I was looking straight ahead with white knuckles and there could have been a caravan 10,000 strong riding red elephants to the south and I would've missed it, for sure.
