OP here. I'm a teacher with a week off in March for Spring Break. An eastern drive small-highways trip all the way to Dallas via this route might be a good solo road trip. Cheap hotels, an occasional beer at the end of each day's ride and talk to some locals at the bar while doing so, wind and scenery and tunes on the car CD player. Solo. Sounds like a good week to me.
There are times I really love living in NM, and this is one of them.

National forest roads in the mountains, or BLM roads in the desert. Pretty much all of them you're going to need 4-wheel drive.
