Question for forum members: is it worth the three hour + drive from Las Cruces to bring some family members who have never seen New Mexico before to go hiking at this destination? I've been up in Silver City before, but never any further. Does this make for a good day trip?
I think if you involve a few other things, like a stop in Pinos Altos and check out the old saloon (make reservations) or stop in Silver City and check out town it is worth it but the catwalk itself isn't that long. DH and I were able to walk and explore it pretty fast, however older people it may take longer because it IS a climb up. There is a pretty park there that you can picnic at and lots of wild life (first time I ever saw a wild javelina in NM was there).

Yes, we were thinking of perhaps stopping back at the Buckhorn for dinner.
Man, my favorite drive is down into the Gila except when DH drives! I have a folder full of photos of deer and wildlife all blurred because of those drives made with my DH.

Just for your reference the hike is only like 2.5 miles (maybe a little less) roundtrip. I've only been in the early, early Spring (Feb/early March) and there wasn't a lot of water and it was pretty dry out but I hear the water flow gets a lot higher and there will be pools with fish. When you get to the end, it just stops and you turn back around but there is a climb that goes off the walk that you can supposedly continue on if you are with people who like to explore. I've never done it, just seen backpackers on it....
No problem, the Cliff Dwelling hike in the Gila would probably be more interesting to people who have never explored NM (don't know if you have ever done that). I've been up there at least a dozen times and the views are amazing.
