Hello,

I have a quick question. Can you give me an idea whether the road to the Wheeler Peak trailhead near the Taos Ski Area is accessible with a 2WD vehicle. Is it a decent dirt road?

Thanks,
Schlawiner

Been up there quite a few times and as long as you're referring to summertime driving then yes a 2WD vehicle should be fine. It's not a rutted out road by any means like some trail-heads require. Probably fine in winter too but that might be a bit trickier on snow.

There are two trailheads, there is the Williams Lake trailhead for a shorter (but steeper) climb on the connecting trail to Wheeler Peak from the west side, you drive on a good dirt road (Kachina Road) a couple miles to get there. The Bull-of-the-Woods trailhead for the longer approach from the north is only maybe 100 yards from the Alpine Village parking lot at the Ski Valley.
