Planning a trip and considering this as part of a NM/TX route.

Anyone familiar with Animas St, the direct route between Lordsburg and Animas?

Wondering about the surface - if it's still mostly gravel (vs paved) and what kind of shape it's in? Drivable with a rear-wheel drive van?

Also wondering if anyone's familiar with local dirt/sand roads A009 or A006 that join Animas St with NM 338.

TIA!

I very much doubt an inch of it has been paved. I haven't driven that road specifically but I've been to Animas and driven a lot of other back roads in southern NM. Google maps make it appear driveable (Google drove it and I don't think they ever use 4wd). Its a very remote and isolated area though, not much out there but suspicious and well-armed local ranchers, border patrol and the people they're looking for. If you lack any experience in such things or lack ability to help yourself if something goes wrong (flat tire, overheating) it would be a good place to avoid. If you are a little more adventurous then I would expect it to be passable if it has been dry, but also very dusty, possibly with some bumpy washboarded sections.

Its kind of an odd place to "take a trip". Whatcha doin and where ya goin and whatcha lookin for?

Thanks, sounds pretty typical for that region.

There is a lot of state land out there, which is likely leased. I've run into very unfriendly armed ranchers near Lordsburg when I inadvertently found myself on their unsigned, leased state parcel. Just in case you intend to poke around off the main road...
