Still, it was the driving style that most worried me. As if everybody was on something, or they had nothing to lose by driving recklessly. When I later drove through Lousiana, it was very similar: absolute disregard for holding a predictable line, crazy tailgating, speeding, etc.
I'm happy to report, that the driving has improved tremendously since Covid and work-from-home became a thing. It has to be seen to be believed, but the traffic has been cut in half, and as a result, people drive normally, are relaxed, don't crowd or tailgate, are attentive, don't run red lights, and generally behave like good drivers. Yes, it's true. It's amazing what happens, when the streets empty out, relatively speaking. People's behavior changes. They're not stressed or rushed.
Yes, it's like that where I live now. So very nice. When I visited CA recently it was back to the aggression, tailgating, being cut off, being flipped off, etc. Then you find yourself doing it (not the flipping off part) and have to make a conscious effort not to.
Canyon Rd. was always gentrified but I had unfortunate incidents in my car on Old Santa Fe Trail and at home on E Buena Vista. I always waitressed and was out at night because of that. There was a 24-hour Rape Crisis Center (I didn't imagine that). Guys would try to block my car or follow it. Once I went running at St. John's and a gang-raped woman staggered out of the woods. Etc. It was like a free fire zone.
If it holds such bad memories for you, why in the world would you want to go back for your birthday? I wouldn't want to have a fancy dinner at Geronimo's and have the image of the staggering gang-raped woman in my mind. I think if you're really so horrified by the things you experienced then you wouldn't go back. But maybe you've gotten over it, in which case you're just yanking our chain.
No chain yanking. I feel I missed the good in Santa Fe by stupidly moving there in 1978 and I want to dispel the stupid memories. The worse memories could have happened anywhere and often did. Young womanhood is a swamp, especially if not escorted.
Reclaiming might be a better term? I once went to a certain place on the California coast to reclaim the area in a positive way, because of negative memories.
At night by 9pm there will be relatively few people on the streets of SF Square or Canyon Road other than those walking back to their cars from dinner, theater etc. At that hour most restaurants are closing, so only the area hotels are still open. We walk around at night often and feel safe, at least till 9pm. Walking anywhere else like out on Cerrillos Road or Agua Fria is a whole other story.
