Ive lived in the Country most of my life but do visit the City a couple of times a month. If i had a Choice of where to live and i was retired or didnt have to Work i would Choose the Country. The City has lots of Traffic, lots of Smog, Lots of Crime. The Country has Little Traffic, Wonderful people, Good Fresh Air and little Crime if that isnt reason enough to avoid the City i dont know what is. The Advantages to city life is you have more Conveniences and places to shop but i would prefer to drive to the big city a couple of times or more a month and go in and get out and go back to my peaceful country life and live awhile longer. My preference is the Center of N.M. and some of the Northern or Eastern parts of N.M.>>>>>>>>>> I dont care for the Air and Heat in the Southern Part of N.M. pintada kid at webtv.net
I'm a country girl all the way. I've never lived in the city and never will (at least I hope). We inherited land from my family, part of which I grew-up on, & we totally love it. I enjoy the city while we're here...work, school, etc...but, I think that's 'cause I get to go back home to the country
I've spent a lot of time in NM over the years and Ilke it a lot. If I were going to live there I would probably chose Roswell because it is smaller and the traffic is less frantic than in Las Cruces.
The problem with county living anywhere is 911. You don't know who they will contact to help you in your emergency or how long it will take before help arrrives. Even the miracle of cellphones and police radios can't get an ambulance located 30 miles away to your house in 5 minutes or less.
Five minutes can mean the difference between life and death. A Triage Unit has 5-10 minutes to stabilize you. If you are old and live in the country, you pray you nnver need a fire truck or an amubulance..
Just one more thing...
I hate to say this, but I should add that there's justone thing that bothers me about living in the country...hunters shooting over my house. Most of the men in my family are hunters (mostly big game), and I've been around it all my life...I've even gone with my dad, brothers & dh on some of their trips. I'm appreciative of the sport, BUT, when hunters decide to shoot over my house to kill their game (usually dove, quail season) and pellets come spraying down all over the place it's upsetting to say the least. It's not just us though, this happens to be a big problem in the county and probably most of New Mexico's counties. I just wish they'd have more respect for their surroundings...at the very least move further out from any houses/barns.

Gotta tell ya though, in Las Cruces it can take about 30 minutes just to get across town.
I think living on the edge of a small city is a good compromise. This is why I am likely to buy a small place in Socorro. I would have reasonable access to stores, medical services, library, college and society while still being able to have quiet and star filled nights. Then I would add a “wilderness” camp somewhere out in the Quebradas and I would have the choice between sociality and solitude.
I love the country. I was born and raised in a town of 500, so living in Rio Rancho is new to me. It has its perks and all but I'd much prefer 5 acres way out in the boonies. We will be moving out near Grants next spring and I cannot wait. That area is more to my liking.
When you really, REALLY live out in the country in NM, a cell phone doesn't work at your house anyway! (some miracle)
Us old folks who really, REALLY live out in the country don't expect anyone else to SAVE us anyway, but I do appreciate your concern.
You ever heard of manana? That's pretty much how 911 works in NM, in town or out.

Don't they still have landlines in NM? I still have a landline and don't plan of ever getting a cell phone. My sister insisted I have one so she bought it and presented it to me even after I said I had no interest in one. Anyway, my son acquired it, and I still use my landline.
To me, they are nothing but a nuisance. Half the time, I can't hear the people on the other end because of the fading and breaking of the conversation, one gets cut off all the time, I'm told, "Hear that? My phone needs charging." What a hassle, and no thank you.
Yes, we have a landline phone and internet phone, too. I have a cell phone in my vehicle, should a roadside emergency occur.
