My husband just got hired onto a position in Hobbs but we've decided to live in Carlsbad, it seems a little closer to a few areas. I've been searching the web for quite awhile and not a whole lot of info for apartments or rentals? We really don't want to purchase a home without getting to know the area a little bit, plus we have 3 children. Anyone have any ideas of what areas of Carlsbad to check out? Thanks for your HELP!!!!

I haven't been to Carlsbad or Hobbs in a number of years, but commuting nearly 70 miles for work is going to get old in a hurry...at least it would for most people!!!

I agree with the length of the commute, but right now it takes him about 45 minutes to get to work. And I heard the speed limit was 75!!!! I'm all for that, so he should be able to get there pretty quick, what do ya think!!!

Well......unless the traffic is light....and he doesn't mind keeping the eyes peeled for cops...........it will take him a minimum of an hour.

If he likes it, no big deal! People are different. I got very tired of commuting 20 miles, so....

Oohrah, first off, when you ask: what do you think, you are supposed to put a question mark at the end(shaped like this; ? )not an exclamation point!
Second off, it's people like you that waste our gas thinking it's alright to commute 70 miles one way(that's 140 round trip) a day. It is not OK!! see?
Third off, he'll be killed by a drunk driver before too long driving that fast every day. What is wrong with you? Are you teched in the head? Geez.

Commuting for 70 miles each way is not unheard of in this region where towns are sparsley located. Hobbs to Carlsbad is exactly 1 hour doing pretty much the speed limit. The road is straight and without much traffic practicaly any time of the day. You would have to be cautious about bad weather in the winter months when roads can get icy.

I can understand living in Carlsbad instead of Hobbs. Having been to Hobbs several times, it seems slightly more run down than Carlsbad. If you have kids, then Carlsbad is probably a much better place to bring them up. The education system in Carlsbad is known to be fairly good relative to the region. However, Hobbs is growing unlike Carlsbad which has not changed much for the past few decades - not exaggerating!

Search on this forum for "Carlsbad" and you will find posts on possible rentals in the city - it should be under a heading of 'moving to carlsbad from NY.' I listed some apartment rentals in the city in that post.

Hope it helps.

Spindoc,
Thanks so much for the info on Carlsbad. I'll check it out about the apartments. I'm glad to hear the schools are ok, thats always a hugh concern for me, it'll be hard enough moving to a new state and leaving all our family. I'm a little bit of everything, scared, excited, anxious but ready for a new start.
I know its going to be quite a commute to Hobbs but it seems as though depending on where you live in NM you have to drive awhile to get to most places. I was just joking about the fast driving, I don't want anyone else out there to have a heart attack.
My husband will be coming down in a couple weeks so hopefully all goes well! Fingers are crossed!

Thanks so much for your time and kindness!!

Default carlsbad

kbbhere,

Your response was down-right crappy. You must have gotten out on the wrong side of the bed this morning. She asked for some suggestions and help and you blew her away.

Paula Lynn,

Thanks for the denfense on that one, WOW! I'm just trying to get as much information as I can, I've been on the web looking as much as possible but I would rather get information from locals or anyone that has lived there in the past. My husband lived in Rio Rancho for 8 years before joining the Marine Corps and has friends in Central NM and in the Alamagordo area but they don't know much about Carlsbad, except for the caverns.
I was reading the forums on Carlsbad and it doesn't sound bad at all. The whole political thing stinks though, about Carlsbad not growing in 20 years.
Hopefully things change someday.
One thing I know for sure is I can't wait to have green chilies again, the food is out of this world!!
Thanks again!!
