I saw a place a year ago in Villanuvea advertised on Realator.com for 40 k. It was 160 acres and a btoken down house and barn. Just the place for solitude.
The colder the better, it helps make the snow stay in the winter up in the high country. I spent May 1st in a blizzard in NE California. Coverage is a good, good thing when I go skiing. Even tooling around the flat lands, it doesn't bother me. I'm well "seasoned" by lots of time spent in high and dry places in the winter.
One of the good guys on the N.M. forum who posts fairly regularly is BrianH, he lives in Clayton, in the northeast corner of the state. IMO that would be a good fit for you. I've been through there lots of times, stayed the night there several times, but not recently.
Clayton to Taos is 180 miles. Clayton to Boise City is around 60 miles. Clayton to Amarillo is 225 miles. One thing about Clayton and the Okie/Texas panhandles, it can really snow in the winter at times. But Clayton is a nice town, don't know anyone in that town personally anymore, used to know a few though. I'll let BrianH tell you more, I'll pm him and hopefully he will respond PDQ!
How much land are you looking for ? There is some good property's with fairly decent prices between our two Real Estate companies here in town. Prices have gone up, but not a huge amount in the last few years. It does get bitter cold here in the Clayton area and it is almost always windy but you get used to it. The town is pretty sleepy but thats they way I like it. Amarillo is about a 2.5hr drive away but you can usually buy stuff in Trinidad (CO) or Dumas (TX) which is where I do most of my shopping when I cant get it here in town.

Brian, seems like a good town. Nice pics on the town website. Looks like a solid community. Landwise ... still in the conceptual planning stages here. So that could vary quite a bit. Not looking to do any sort of major operation or anything, just enough for a small amount of live stock and perhaps some small ag usage. Would have to learn a bit more about the typical usages there. So, probably between 100 and 300 acres, which I reckon to be small by local standards. Of course as noted, I would also look at larger parcels then rent out portions retaining my own usage of a smaller part. Obviously quite a few dependencies such as water supply, soil type, etc.
