Somehow I began receiving Popular Science for free in the mail. The latest issue has a several page article on the Las Conchas fire. It seems to revolve around a study on it and the mechanics that caused this fire to get out of control. As it turns out the caldera itself filling with cold, heavy air in the evening may have been the trigger.

Pretty interesting. Flaming pine cones being thrown 2 miles through the air to start new fires....

I guess you will have to find it in the store to read. I did a little search online and have not seen it reprinted yet on their site.

I use to read Popular Science when I was a kid, which was of course before the Internet... I just gave away about 100 pounds of National Geographic...

The Las Conchas Fire was pretty devastating:

The Las Conchas Fire was a wildfire in New Mexico, USA, in 2011. The fire started in Santa Fe National Forest and burned more than 150,000 acres, threatening Los Alamos National Laboratory and the town of Los Alamos. After five days of burning, it became the largest wildfire in New Mexico state history at the time, though it was surpassed the following year by the Whitewater-Baldy Complex Fire.

The Las Conchas Fire began at approximately 1 PM on June 26, 2011 just west of the park. In its first 13 hours it burned over 44,000 acres or almost an acre a second.
