I don't know. My neighbor planted a tree. Is it really going to survive here north of Santa Fe at 6,000 feet?

We moved into a rental during the summer that had a ton of pecan trees and we picked tons of them off the ground that were delicious.

I looked like most of the pecan trees I seen in Eastern NM were already harvested, I picked me up some awesome pecan divinity in Portales yesterday at Bordon Peanuts.

Thumbs up Largest produce of pecan in the world!

STAHMANN FARMS PECAN ORCHARDS, NM

Quote:
...no one knows why Deane Stahmann decided to pull out his cotton plants and plant the first pecan trees in the Mesilla valley. Some say it was his wife's idea. Others say it was the economy or the development of synthetic fabrics. Whatever the reason, he planted over 4,000 acres of pecan trees in the early 1930's on two separate plots of land, the 2,900 acre Santo Tomas Farm and the 1,100 Snow Farm. Soon the Stahmanns became the largest pecan producing family in the United States. Years later, when Deane Jr. planted 2,000 acres of trees in Australia, the Stahmanns became the largest pecan producers in the world.

It's a lovely area to visit for a number of reasons, the pecan orchards being just one factor. OLD MESILLA is adjacent to Stahmanns and one of the most picturesque small towns in the state (IMO). And not to be missed, if you love good "Mexican" food, is Chope's Restaurant in La Mesa - as well as the restaurants around the Plaza in Old Mesilla (La Posta is a must, IMO).
