Well, perhaps our almighty Governor should do something more than just, "You drink, you drive, you lose." Lose what, anyways? 30 days of work because I'm in jail? Oh, man, what an inconvenience! And the ignition interlock is just stupid. I mean, they can easily just get behind the wheel of a friend's car, which is probably what most repeat offenders do.

What would you prefer? Public lynchings?

If my best friend got caught with a DWI, I'd support them, but I sure as heck ain't dumb enough to let them get behind the wheel of my car, even if they're sober. Could lose my car that way.

Plenty of dumb people in this state but I think the number of times they've caught them doing that is pretty small.

If my best friend got busted for DWI, I'd tell them how much of a ----ing loser they are. Really.

Does anyone have a reason as to why drinking is such a big deal here in NM (this thread is for NM, not any other state). I'm not trying to be a smart ***** or anything, but that's the way I see it. I go to the corner store for gas during the evenings, and everybody is walking out with booze. It's extra noticeable on Fridays and Saturdays too. Even during the day. And there are/were plenty of people at my current and previous employer that talk about how much they got liquored up, or about how much they're going to drink come pay day..... Seems like such a waste of money.

The reason is that it isn't... NM is 36th out of the 50 states for heavy drinkers.
Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitors sites is not allowed

It's 13th in total consumption though: One Day in America - TIME (http://www.time.com/time/2007/america_numbers/alcohol.html - broken link)

If you'd like to discuss waste, I'd bet alcohol is far down the list. Higher up would be stuff like... why do people eat crappy food, smoke cigarettes, blow hundreds at the track and casino on a regular basis, drive 6000 lb vehicles to haul nothing but their 200 lb butt, live in houses that are huge, poorly insulated, and do not take advantage of the abundant passive solar potential... etc.

Yeah but you are forgetting something (or maybe you're not), this thread is about how DWI's in NM are out of control. Not about big trucks, food, the environment, or whatever else.

you should have read the article in yesterdays paper, it mentioned how NM ranked 1st or 2nd in a couple different categories involving alcohol.

It's just a social thing. You go to quinceaneras and everyone has a beer... You go to a baptism, same thing. But mostly, we just drink with our friends. Everyone comes over and just hangs out.. We talk, watch tv, cook food or order something... It's kind of the way it's always been in New Mexico, and I think that that's something common in most latino or traditionally latino cultures like New Mexico. That being said, I don't know many people that have driven drunk..

A way to solve the drunk driving problem and even the entire alcoholism problem is to decrease the drinking age back to 18, or at least 19, as most other countries have it, have alcohol education programs in schools that don't demonize drinking, and make sure our kids grow up seeing their parents drink responsibly. The problem is we demonize alcohol, so as kids get older, they intentionally get alcohol for the thrill of it. If it wasn't demonized, I doubt we'd have as many problems.. Look at Italy, where kids pretty much are raised drinking. Much lower alcoholism rate than in the US. I'm never a supporter of strict or stricter laws on the books. Maybe instead of putting convicted drunk drivers behind bars for a little while and a little fine, maybe they should instead be forced into an alcohol education class, and at the discretion of the judge, attend AA meetings. Rehabilitation is much better than strict penalties in my book. And also cheaper to the state, which means the tax payer. If the person keeps driving drunk, revoke their drivers license and then maybe consider jail time. That's my two cents...

I knew a friend that worked for a major company and had (1) DWI..not convicted, but still FIRED from this private company because of his/her off time DWI. This was many years ago.....
(not a gov. worked...)

It seems in NM that ok drink and drive, go to court, and drink and drive again...
Up to 13 x's for some person's...In WA. state..after 3-5 DWI''s it's like to jail for at least 3 years.

Why can't NM get the msg...

Be this New Years will have at least 1 fatal accident + how many DWI's.

I feel that a tavern, bar, lounge, whatever that serves liquor should be responsible to say hey 2 drinks..that's it for 2 hours...or something like that.

Maybe you might not care, but, if if it's one of your loved ones;;then what

HW HAPPY NEW YEAR AND BE SAFE...CALL A CAB...CALL SOMEONE IF YOU THINK THAT YOU MIGHT OR WILL BE HAVING A FEW TOO MANY..
i wonder what can be done? This is totally nuts. I used to be afraid to be on any road in NM after dark.. You know though, it really isn't up to the establishment to decide. This is putting an extra strain on them and encouraging more law suite. Let's just sue to bar, we know the drunk driver doesn't have much insurance if any.

To desert Sun, yes, you are right about so many drinking anytime of the day. While we were still in NM, 2 old men, minding their own business, coming home at 10am from coffee with friends were killed by a drunk driver only about a mile from where we lived. The drunk driver also had a 6 year old in her car...The driver and the little girl were not hurt.

The drinking/driving laws are so stupid it makes me sick. NOBODY CARES.

And no, I don't drink and drive. Because I am law abiding. But most people are not. Obviously.

agree, most of us have lost a lot of respect for MADD. They started out with the right idea and brought the problems of drinking and driving to the front line. I have to admit, many years ago I don't even want to think about how many times I got behind the wheel when I should have just crawled in bed. Today, I would not think of drinking and driving, but I also have no respect for MADD> If they had their way, drinking period would be illegal.
