Will be coming to NM in early March from Connecticut to "see the state."
We will rent a car and spend the week. Can anyone give us suggestions about the "must see's" in the state: any good suggestions for a road trip lasting about a week or so throughout NM. Thank you.
I am not sure a week would be enough time for a road trip "throughout NM." Seems like all you would be doing is driving from place to place without a chance to get a feel for any of it.
We have lived here for a year and a half now, and there has still not been time to travel all over the state. This state is very large and spread out.
Perhaps you could pick out several cities in the state you would like to see; or several sections of the state that interest you?
The interstates in NM connect the major population centers and are the quickest way to get from one to the other, but the least scenic routes and at 75mph speed limit, not much leeway for taking eyes off the road for long.
Secondary highways are often narrow two-lanes with very narrow shoulders but afford the most scenic views.
So "seeing NM" depends on what your main interest are - seeing the population centers or seeing the scenic landscapes?
Santa Fe
Jemez, NM
Petroglyphs, Albuquerque
Old Town, Albuquerque
Tram to Sandia Peak, Albuquerque
Albuquerque
White Sands, longer drives
Carlsbad Caverns, longer drives
I suggest you spend a couople of days in Albuquerque and visit the museums to get an overview of places to visit. You should also take the tram at sunset. With the remaining time I would do a loop of back roads to Taos and back.
You need to narrow down the areas. The state is very beautiful and there's a lot to explore. We lived there for four years and still have some things left that we haven't seem yet.
You could almost lose Connecticut on the plains of St Augustine along Rts 60 & 12 and have room left over. New Mexico is a very big state. A short tour of the south west sector - Alamogordo, Silver city, VLA and back to Socorro took 3 days and we did not see anyplace in detail except the Road to Mogollon.
I suggest picking an area and taking the time to see it. "Off the Beaten Path in New Mexico" is a helpful book.
