Get caught drunk driving?

That ignition interlock they're making you get cost too much?

No problem! We the government will subsidize it for you.

How do we know you can't afford it and aren't just a lying sack? We'll just take your word for it. In Vino Veritas, or something like that..

Ok, well, as of now (just now!) we're going to require some proof that you're indigent before we subsidize it for you.

Buck up, there, drunk driver.. driving's your right, even if you couldn't afford it before your arrest, and we the government will try not to make it too big a hardship.

The more you drink and buy alcohol, the more you help other drunk drivers pay for their subsidized ignition interlocks. So drink up!

This was one subsidy I did not approve of in the beginning. This is a start, however if you drink and drive and get caught, you need to fess up and take care of business instead of sponging money from the tax payers.

this has always bothered me. I generally dislike taxes/subsidies for most things, with a few important exceptions, but this is just proof that some people think being baby-sat all the time is okay. Make them pay for it their own damned selves, otherwise it's just a stint in county jail and a slap on the wrist after they get out. That, or raise the penalties for drinking and driving..

Instead of being Puritanical and telling everyone that alcohol is concentrated, drinkable evil, what about teaching people how to responsibly deal with alcohol and its effects? Everyone knows that one of the best ways to ensure your kids do something is to tell them NOT TO DO IT. Don't tell them to not drink, tell them that if they're going to drink, to just not go anywhere. I was raised by a bartender, a waitress, and guy who partied a fair amount- they never said not to drink, they just told me to be intelligent about it, and so I am. when I even have one beer, I don't go anywhere, and if I think of something I need to go and get from the store before it closes, I'll put the beer back in the fridge before drinking any of it.

It's always funny to me to see a "good Christian girl" or whatever at her first college party/kickback/whatever and get totally trashed because she's been dying to get drunk ever since she heard about her older siblings doing it while she was stuck in high school. It always turns into the girl either getting sick and being in a pretty miserable state of mind, or her friends talking her out of bad decisions as they help her stumble into the back seat of the car.
