Years ago we'd stop on the side of the road on a steep hill. We'd fill up plastic bottles for free from a spring.

Don't know about the particular spring you mention. Many have dried up in the past several decades. Others once used by the public have been plugged because of concern for contamination. In the Ruidoso area, the forest service plugged one such "fountain of youth" that was used for years by locals seeking "pure water." They didn't state there was an actual danger - only that they didn't want the liability should there be a problem.

There is still running water most of the time in Haynes Canyon, just to the south of US-82 at Mountain Park. All of the flowing streams in the Sacramento and White Mountains are spring fed. Some of those streams that used to flow reliably year around no longer do so.

No it's not there anymore. I loved that sweet water when we would go up to Cloudcroft. I had heard something about concerns about contamination. Nothing is as pristine as it used to be. I remember when you could look from Alamogordo to the Organ Mountains and see the mountain clearly. When hubby and I lived at Airport Mobile Park in the late 70's you could watch fireworks at eye level. hehe Now it is just hazy from the pollution of El Paso and Juarez.
