Crime, albeit petty crime such as vagrancy, panhandling, and trespassing, are WAY up in my neck of the woods in the last year or so. I can't remember the last time I saw a policeman in my neighborhood who wasn't eating a cheeseburger at Kellys (if you are going to be a victim of a crime, try to do it at Kellys around lunchtime). Granted, these vagrants tend to be Native American and Caucasian, not illegal immigrants, but if we can't handle our own layabouts...

NBC News just reported on a national poll with identical results to this poll - 70% favor the Arizona law and 30% oppose.

My guess is that you'd have a resounding YES..very near that same 59% majority who favor the AZ law.

Of course, those people would be wrong...the opposite is true, but AZ law proponents either don't know or don't care that crime in AZ has gone DOWN during the purported illegal immigration crisis of the last few years.
This is right up there with "keep your big socialist government hands off my Medicare" protest signs. Not much of a connection with reality.
You're taking a very narrow approach to the problem of crime.

The biggest reason crime is down is all thanks to the new prisons they've built and less lenient judges and laws that make repeat offenders stay in prison.

And of course you are conveniently "forgetting" that Phoenix is now the kidnapping capital of the world, second only to Mexico City.

You're also forgetting that many illegals are incarcerated in our jails and prisons, making these far more costly than they should be.

Crime rates are down nationwide. It has little to do with more prisons or less lenient judges and more to do with the aging of the population and as I stated on the Albuquerque thread, the Roe v. Wade decision and wider use of contraceptives that prevented the birth of future criminals. If the Republicans better understood that relationship, they'd probably be more pro-choice.

This, of course, ignores the fact that the very presence of an illegal alien in the US is a crime in itself.

It also overlooks the fact that the first thing an illegal alien does on US soil is commit a crime.
