First off, let me say, i've only visited NOLA once and left.. a little unimpressed.. unfortunately the significant other loves it there. So my question is, what are the pros and cons of New Orleans? I currently live in Tampa (which I love) and wouldn't choose to leave if it were up to me. We both have good educations (she's got a masters and I'll be finishing mine in december). I know the culture aspect of the city is a drawing point for a lot of people. I am not so impressed (reminded me of a drunken disney world without the rides, just the tourist crap). Anyone be able to change my mind or at least make me less anxious?

Did you ever get off Bourbon St.? There is a lot more to the city than drunken tourists. Let her show you what she loves.

Sounds like you walked down Bourbon only and made a judgement. What else did you do? The locals don't even fool with that massive, redneck tourist infested sewer.

New Orleans has more buildings on the National Historic Register than any other city, and that includes philly, New York, Boston, etc. In other words, even if you did venture out of the tourist areas there would still be many many facets of the city that you wouldn't have seen.

First, where did you go? That would help.
Second, what does she love?

How long did you stay? There are so many different areas, each with a culture of its own, and many definitely do NOT give off the drunken-Disney World vibe. Also, there's quite a bit of natural beauty which I didn't know about until I moved here. Visit again and stay away from the tourist areas, then make your judgement.

If you stayed the typical length of time ~ 4 or 5 days ~ then you likely didn't acquaint yourself with the city, including its culture ~ presuming you spent all your time in the French Quarter. And I'm not stretching it, as one of my friends spent a week there and the only time she left the Quarter was to take a plantation tour.

There is rich history, culture, architecture, and remarkable cuisines there, and it's just a FUN place. I always feel GOOD when we're there. Chances are you just didn't spread yourself out enough.

But it isn't for everybody. It's like the time I spent a week in San Diego ~ nice place, but I just couldn't quite see the big deal, and never had an urge to go back.

Ya...don't go to Bourbon Street and judge the city. Locals hate Bourbon.

The Marigny (district downriver of the Quarter...and Frenchman Street and her jazz clubs)
Magazine Street (and the restaurants and shops)
St. Charles down to the universities...

The city does however seem steeped in a time bubble, its a little 19th century here...and that's a huge plus (and it can be a bit maddening at times) however, I wouldn't live anywhere else.
