First off, let me say, i've only visited NOLA once and left.. a little unimpressed.. unfortunately the significant other loves it there. So my question is, what are the pros and cons of New Orleans? I currently live in Tampa (which I love) and wouldn't choose to leave if it were up to me. We both have good educations (she's got a masters and I'll be finishing mine in december). I know the culture aspect of the city is a drawing point for a lot of people. I am not so impressed (reminded me of a drunken disney world without the rides, just the tourist crap). Anyone be able to change my mind or at least make me less anxious?

New Orleans has more buildings on the National Historic Register than any other city, and that includes philly, New York, Boston, etc. In other words, even if you did venture out of the tourist areas there would still be many many facets of the city that you wouldn't have seen.

How long did you stay? There are so many different areas, each with a culture of its own, and many definitely do NOT give off the drunken-Disney World vibe. Also, there's quite a bit of natural beauty which I didn't know about until I moved here. Visit again and stay away from the tourist areas, then make your judgement.

If you stayed the typical length of time ~ 4 or 5 days ~ then you likely didn't acquaint yourself with the city, including its culture ~ presuming you spent all your time in the French Quarter. And I'm not stretching it, as one of my friends spent a week there and the only time she left the Quarter was to take a plantation tour.
