In all the years I lived in NOLA and have visited here since, I have never heard car horns like I have this visit. I understand that people drive questionably in the city, but I think some of these are just doing it for entertainment.

I always wonder the same thing when I go to places like NY and Chicago. I think people just honk because they are impatient and sort of for amusement. I haven't heard much horn honking in NOLA.

Walk around some of the residential areas of NYC/Manhattan, and what shall you see?

Signs: $350 fine for honking your horn in a residential area!

Just means New Orleans is that much closer to being New York City.

Maybe it's all of the street car construction making people impatient?

I think you hit the nail on the head. There is A LOT of road construction right now in this city. I'm hoping that's a good thing in the long run.

You know, I've never seen that enforced.

Morial in the 90s had streets in the whole CBD demolished when he was trying to get his referendum on unlimited mayoral terms passed. We've had road construction before. I personally think its the transplants bringing in bad driving habits. By that I don't mean bad driving - we've had that covered for decades. I mean that the habit of making driving a tension-filled experience.

I lived for almost 20 years in the NE after leaving NO, and have seen real road rage that I always was thankful we never had. Also spent plenty of time in NYC and seen how taxi drivers try to get you killed every day. Sadly, now that I'm back the laid-back driving attitude I remember is jacked up a few notches.

People, plz. Realize that driving in New Orleans is a free show. Enjoy the houses and trees on St. Charles. Check out the tourists and the freaks in the quarter as you cruise past. We live here because we want to die of liver failure, not a heart attack.

I'm not sure about your theory, but I love your last sentence. As much as I would like to deny it, you speak the truth. I'm trying to raise kids here, so this will have to be our secret. Jokes aside, I understand why you came back. It's a great city.
