my mom is moving there with her husband in 2 months. he went down there for work to build houses and install swimming pools. not exactly sure which area but she said its near the bayou and in the gulf of mexico. im very worried about her. are there places she should definatley stay away from? is she moving into a high crime area? will there be lots of snakes and alligators since she will live so close to the bayou? if anyone has any general information or any precautions she should take while living there please share it with me. i want to make sure she stays safe and has a heads up about anything or what to expect before she goes down there. i will try to find out the zip code she will live in as houma is a pretty big area. thanks in advance!!

Houma, overall, is a fairly safe city, especially for Louisiana. There are, as with most working class cities, bad neighborhoods. Most of these are on the East side of the Intracoastal Waterway. Most neighborhoods on the West side of the waterway are pretty safe. Houma is built around it's waterways, so yes, you may see an occasional snake on the edge of the bayou. Unless you live directly on the bayou, you shouldn't have to worry about finding an Alligator or anything in your yard. And if you have an outside dog or cat, snakes will find your yard unappealing.
