I have a question for current residents residing in Co-Op City. If you lived in Co-Op City before 2005 this question isnt really for you as 10 years a lot can change.

Which section would be considered the worst as far as safetly and there being shootings, fights, ghetto and just a lot of random activity that would make one feel unsafe?

Which would you consider the best as far as quiet, less people hanging around in front of buidling or staircases?

Also which section has the shortest commute by public transportation into Midtown NYC?

I'm guessing there must not be that many people on this site who reside and know about Co-Op City on this site.

I know that certain part of Co-OP are bad, I know a few people who live in section 5 and they say it's not bad to live there, but I don't really hang out down there so couldn't tell you.

I live near co-op city, and I'm glad you posted this because I'm planning on moving to co-op city as soon as my name is called off the waiting list as well. I moved to the Northeast Bronx in early 2015, and found that most of the neighborhood around co-op city lacks basic shopping and services. Because of this everything from my Doctor to my Grocery Store is in Co-op City. Before moving to the Northeast Bronx earlier this year I'd never been to Co-op City before, and had only seen it passing by on I-95. Now I'm there at least once a week for one reason or another. Being basically the largest project in America, I expected it to be more gritty for some reason, but it really proved to be the opposite. It's kind of like the most perfectly planned socialist housing community in America. It offers amenities such as views, balconies, free gas/electicity/air conditioning, cheap maintenance, shopping, retail, restaurants, parking. My favorite part is the large amount of green space. I feel that in a city of so much concrete, it is amazing to see a place that has so much green space for it's residents. The large lawns are beautiful, and the near by Givan Creek Woods, Pelham Bay Park, and Orchard Beach add to this. The one drawback is that it is essentially a walled off community due to the two highways that surround it and the lack of subway transit. Although there are talks of expanding the Metro North to Co-op City, and the BxM7 express bus offers transit complex-wide to Manhattan in 45 minutes, it still is weird being in such a dense community without subway transit. It basically is America's only "vertical suburb" offering the benefits of suburban and urban living all wrapped up into one. Living in New York City for my entire life, and knowing most of the city very well, it is probably one of the most fascinating places in the city. Most of the residents I know or I've talked to who live there genuinely love living there. Of course there are minor gripes (e.g parking, for residents who don't choose to park in the parking lots which are $60 a month, can be rough to find.)

To answer your question about crime, for such a dense community of 50-60,000 people in 35 buildings, it is remarkably sleepy and quiet. I can't speak of what it was in the past, but from what I see these days; there is not alot of crime, and the development has it's own police force. A large part of the population is elderly, and so this may change in the future, but I don't get the impression that even the notorious Section 5 is somehow more crime ridden these days. In fact I hardly see police out there making arrests and what not. Reminds me of the suburbs on Long Island or Queens alot. Section 5 is weird because it's kind of isolated from the rest of the complex and is almost a separate project, but I wouldn't mind living there either because it's right by the water and has nice large fields and it's own shopping center. Only thing is I hear parking there is the worst of all the sections. I'm sure there is crime, I've done some reading lately on what goes on there amongst the local papers. Several months ago, someone shot at the cops from high up in one of the towers and there was also a big gang bust where a dozen or so gang members in Co-op City were rounded up, but I mean it's impossible to eliminate crime entirely especially because alot of the people in the city live in poverty or close to poverty (The majority though are working class with good income).

It's just far from the city also I'm on the waiting list as well and familiar with visiting Co-op but not living there so boogie down dweller you know as much as me. I've heard mixed reviews and from a visitor it seems a lot better than what I've been told. Section 5 is isolated I don't know if the a benefit or not. Also wondered which section is better as far as shorter commute into midtown.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. The BxM7 does a loop around coop and then heads straight to the city stopping between 125th and 23rd. I've read it takes 45 minutes to an hour. Depending on traffic. I think all parts of the complex are equidistant in that respect. I also hope you are not planning on moving there without a car. A car improves quality of life a whole lot. If your really trying to take the subway there are two buses that take about 10 minutes, from what I here from residents, one goes to the 5 and the other the six. Also the 5 is like a 5-10 minute walk from Sections 1,2, &3

The whole distance from the city thing is a pain. For me I work in the bronx so its not that big a deal, also with all your stores, restaurants, and what not on Einstein loop, dreiser loop, and in Bay plaza I doubt you'll miss the city much.

Yeah I rode the express bus once to go to work (rush hour) from Parkchester and it took me close to an hour and half so I could imagine on the regular from Co op in the morning it will be an average of hour and half if leaving at say 8am. Hope once that Metro North comes that would alleviate the travel stress for those who want or have to go into Manhattan. A car would seem nessesary because of its location and two far zone.
